|
|
This weeks technique is written by CHF Designer- Lisa Silver - I hope you enjoy her take on the many uses of Copic Markers!
As more of us get Copic markers, I thought it would be valuable to showcase their versatility. Many of the ideas have been things I’ve learned from other talented stampers and thought I’d capture all in one place.
There are several ways to use Copic markers to color an image:
• Layer and blend
• Pick up a darker color with a lighter marker
• Use a colorless blender pen to transfer color, remove ink and soften edges of colored areas.
• Highlight and shadow
• Airbrush areas with soft color
• Create custom backgrounds (with solvent or the blender pen)
• Custom dyed ribbon and embellishments (like brads and dew drops)
• Use the Colorless blender pen to soften the edges of Prismacolor pencils (blend) – in place of odorless mineral spirits. The same caution about using the right kind of cardstock and base ink are still relevant in this case.
Supplies Needed:
• Bloomin’ Beautiful and Scripty Words stamp sets
• Prism Cardstock: Frosted Kiwi, Frosted Orange,Iced Orange
• Curious Iridescent White Shimmery cardstock
• Copic Markers- E00 – Skin White, R02 –Flesh, YR09 – Chinese Orange, G40 – Dim Green, G14 – Apple Green, YG06 – Yellowish Green, B00 – Frost Blue, W1 – Warm Gray 1
• Empty CD case or plastic palette
• Adirondack Pitch Black ink
• Heat gun (optional)
• Oval Classic and Scallop Nestabilities from Ellen Hutson, LLC
• Dew Drops (Clear) from Ellen Hutson, LLC
• White grosgrain ribbon from May Arts
• Corner rounding punch by EK Success
• Mini glue dots
• Ranger Mini spray bottle
• Fiskers cutting system with scoring blade
|
|
Create Custom Backgrounds
Step 1:Completely color a neutral colored piece of cardstock with a Copic marker. This is especially helpful if you don’t have the right color paper, but want to match your inks.
Step 2: Fill a mini spray bottle with solvent. You can use the colorless blending solution (refill) or Isopropanol (which is readily available and inexpensive).
|
|
Step 3: Spray the colored cardstock. This randomly removes some of the Copic ink for a splotchy effect.
|
|
|
|
NOTE: Another way to create a custom background is to follow step 1 and instead of spraying with solvent, use the blender pen to create patterns. I used the blender pen to create a polka dot background for this card:
|
|
Create Custom Dyed Embellishments
1. Directly color brads for that perfect match.
|
|
2. Color the back of clear Dew Drops.
NOTE: Do not heat set on the dew drops. I should insert the age old phrase, “ask me how I know”. All kidding aside, the heat gun will melt the dew drop, as it appears to be a plastic/resin composition.
|
|
Airbrush System
Airbrush soft color to the edges of your cardstock, rather than sponging color. This ensures your colors match your project. Ellen Hutson did a wonderful tutorial on how to use the airbrush system she sells, so I’ll direct you to her blog for this.
|
|
|
|
Custom Dyed Ribbon
Step 1: Cut desired length of neutral ribbon.
Step 2: Run the Copic marker of choice along each side until it’s saturated.
Step 3: Heat set (gently), if you’d like to use it immediately.
NOTE: The ribbon will be stiffer than normal.

Finished Projects
Here are my inished projects outlining many of these tips and techniques.
If you have Copic markers we would love to see how you use them in combination with our stamps! Please upload to the gallery and link back here so we can all see your creations!

Great samples Lise!
That's so funny - I got dewdrops last week and wanted to figure out what they were made of. One of my tests was to put one in the oven for a couple of minutes _________________ Joanne x

The oven! That is SO something I'd do! My husband teases me about needing to play scientist still.
Thanks, everyone! I hope this helps.

If I'd thought of the heat gun I'd have probably done that but we have an Aga (do you guys have those?) so there's always oven heat available here and shoving a dew drop on a bit of foil in there seemed perfectly natural to me! I'd already crushed one with a hammer and was wavering from my initial impression that they might be glass so a heat test was the obvious next step.
Enquiring minds and all that (and no, I was never a scientist so I don't have your excuse, Lise!) _________________ Joanne x

This is super! I love the look the Copics give, but (and just to heist the thread) can you get the same/similar looks with Prismacolour pens?
If so, does anyone know of a tutorial similar to this that I can study? I've seen the one from the Prismacolour site that Asela gave us, but I'd love to see something like this. Like Asela, I don't want to replace perfectly good pens!
Thanks for any help. _________________ “Anyone who lives within their means suffers from a lack of imagination.” - Oscar Wilde |

They're markers filled with alcohol ink, LinB. Very popular with graphic artists and manga cartoon people! You can colour in large areas without getting those 'overlap' lines you get with regular markers, blend and shade with them, use them in an airbrush system etc.
Sorry otagogirl, I don't know about Prismacolour pens so I can't help with that one - I'm sure somebody here can though! _________________ Joanne x
