I think all stampers and scrappers are thrify. We love a bargain and will stock up on items that might come in handy someday. Dollar Bins and bargain stores alike get a thorough scrutiny by paper-crafters. We're the MacGyver of the crafting world... paper, glue and tape make magic!!!
This "technique" is the last of three articles designed to get you thinking about what you have around you... with the focus on recycling jars. Empty spice, jelly and salsa jars can take on a new life with the magic of paper crafting. In celebration of Earth Day, April 22nd, I challenge you to rummage in your recycle bin for prime alterable items. Not only will you be saving money, you'll be saving the Earth.
Join us this week in creating a treasure from trash. We can't wait to see what you recycle!
Thanks for joining us!
Basic Supplies
- Stamps
- Dye Ink
- Jars
- Cardstock and Patterned Paper
- Color Media
- Die cutting machine
- trims and lace (optional)
- Gesso and Paint (optional)
Specific Supplies Used:
Step One
Thoroughly clean and dry an empty jelly jar.
Prime the lid with gesso and allow to dry.
Step Two
Apply multiple coats of paint to the lid of the jar.
Step Three
Stamp a decorative element for the jar and color with your preferred media. If using the stamped piece on the body of the jar, add some eyelets to each side to help tie to the front with grosgrain ribbon.
First Project Example
Complete the jar with the stamped element and a bit of ribbon. Add a bright and fun candy for a perfect quick gift.
Step Four
Another great and simple project idea is to stamp the lid of a pretty old spice jar. Ink a Scrapblock® or a backgrounder with Cotton White Stazon.
Step Five
Gently place on the top of the jar and mold to fit the shape of the lid. The unmounted backgrounders are perfect for this type of stamping, since the lid of my jar is slightly domed.
Step Six - Optional
For this project, I opted to make a jar candle. I purchased Microwaveable Soy Wax and wicks from a local craft store. Follow the manufacturer's directions to complete.
Second Project Example
I kept this jar very simple so the stamped design takes center stage. It's simple color scheme reminded me of Wedgewood china.
Second Project Example - Detail
The candle can be scented and dyed, if you prefer.
Third Example Project
Top any jar for a quick and amazing gift or storage. I made a couple of these Poppy jars - one as a candle and one I'll use for small paper flowers.
Third Example Project - Detail
The jar is clear and perfect for storage. I've added several of my loose paper flowers so I'll be able to see inside and know what I have.
And this would make a great gift for a fellow paper crafter.
Jar Examples
Your gift options are endless. Jars filled with paperclips, tacks and erasers would look fabulous with Making the Grade images. A larger jar with decorative tags would look lovely as windowsill flowerpots. And if you are looking for something unique, make a set of containers with baby supplies for an expectant mother and Baby Love tags.
What other ideas do you have? We'd love to hear about it!

these are gorgeous, I specially like the candle pot , now I MUST have that paisley backgrounder
did you seal the tops of the other pots after stamping?
I can think of teachers gifts or fill a jar with quotes and take one out every day
a jar with prompts about their past for your parents if you are still lucky enough to have them and use the answers in your scrapbooking
get well goodies |

Great projects, I love that pretty blue candle jar!
Winter Vintage Signage or Primitive Christmas would be great for jars to fill with candy or cookies to make little holiday gifts or you could do those as candles too.
How about "cookie in a jar" mix with Baked with Love, that would be cute!
If you can buy olives or tapenade in bulk you could divide into smaller jars and decorate with the olive stamp from Vegetable Harvest for an economical small gift - again, useful at holiday time, maybe? _________________ Joanne x

I didn't seal the tops but a quick spray of Krylon sealer (or any preferred brand) or a swipe of Mod Podge would do the trick.
If I make something that would need to be used in a kitchen, bath or classroom, I like to seal the project so they can be wiped clean. _________________ Lisa Silver

A few other fun things I might do for my home are:
a jar (without the lid) decorated to hold my measuring spoons
a small container for my laundry pegs
old bottle designed for a vase
Thanks for sharing the great ideas! I love the tapenade gift option, Joanne. _________________ Lisa Silver
