Papercrafting trends have waxed and waned over the years, but one trend that seems to be here to stay is the love of all things fiber and fabric. Whether you stitch on your project, add ribbons, or use fabric-inspired backgrounders or papers, you can be assured that you are with the "in-crowd"!

Join us this week to create using this technique. Drop us a note with any tips, questions or just to share your successes!

Supplies Needed:

Step One
Stamp the central image, which for my project is The Prayer from the Sandra Kuck Series.

I used my brayer to get an even distribution of ink on the stamp. Before stamping, I also used a piece of sponge to lift a bit of ink from the edges and around the little girl to soften the color. I wanted her to stand out in this process.

Color your image, using a technique outlined:
---> Coloring Detailed Images
---> Colored Pencils Blended with Gamsol or Baby Oil
---> Thomas Kinkade Web Copic Tutorial

There are other great tutorials outlined in the Technique Talk Forum. Look around to find a style that suits you!

Set this aside until you are ready to complete your card.
Step Two
Ink the Fine Houndstooth Scrapblock™ with Espresso Adirondack dye ink and stamp on glossy cardstock.

Allow to completely dry (which can take some time) or you can gently heat set to dry.
Step Three
Align your stamped cardstock horizontally and sand in the same direction, gently removing the sheen of the glossy paper.
Step Four
Shift your stamped cardstock vertically and sand again, in the same direction, creating a cross-hatch effect rubbed into the paper.

How your final cardstock looks is based on how much sanding you do.
Step Five
Use a small piece of sponge, a tissue / napkin, or bit of cheesecloth to remove your sanding dust. This will prevent little bits of debris being transferred to your ink pad in the next step.
Step Six
To really highlight and focus on the sanding you did in the previous steps, brayer or sponge ink onto the stamped cardstock. If you use a sponge, ink the cardstock in streaks, following the "grain" of your sanding.

I used a brayer and Latte Adirondack dye ink for my project. Lighter colors are ideal for this layer, as it's to highlight the sanded spots.

Allow to completely dry. Since most of the gloss has been removed in all the sanding, this has a faster drying time.
Step Seven
Lightly sand your inked cardstock to further distress edges and lighten dark areas.
Details
Completed Faux Fabric... the sanding of your cardstock really does give a "thread" look to the paper.

A medium grit sandpaper will give a rougher texture to your fabric, which is perfect for tweeds and other course fabrics. Use a light grit for linens and cottons.
Final Project
Complete your card.

Notes and Example:
- This technique has also been called "Faux Linen". Rather than limit your creativity, I've called it a fabric technique, opening a window of other uses!

- Any of the backgrounders that Cornish Heritage Farms offer would work perfectly with this technique, as fabric patterns abound!

- Julia completed an amazing example where the central image is distressed using this technque with her No Eye Has Seen sample. This makes her image look like it had been screen-printed on fabric.

- Embellish your project with hints of real fabric or fabric accessories like upholstery tacks, ribbons and stitching. Keep with the theme for the perfect design tie-in!

- Look for the cues from your stamped image. The main image in this project was The Prayer, with the little one kneeling at her bedside. Using fabric-inspired techniques and embellishments draw attention to the bedding and fabric of the image. Other great associations from an image might be a snowman's scarf, ribbons on a Christmas tree or a flowing dress.

Thanks!
