Cornish Heritage Farms has done it again! They have found an artist whose images are thought-provoking, touching and detailed - and bring them to you in deeply etched red rubber, which is a signature of the CHF quality. Sisters, the debut image to the new Sandra Kuck Collection at Cornish Heritage Farms, is the focus of today's technique.
Create a soft look for your images by stamping on vellum and coloring on the reverse with Copic markers. The texture of the paper mutes the colors and makes it a perfect technique for highly detailed images.
I hope you'll join us this week in trying the technique.
Supplies Needed:
Step One
To ensure even coverage of ink and avoid creating "lines" from the edges of your ink pad, I used my brayer. In this example, I inked my stamp with Espresso Adirondack dye ink and stamped on a square of vellum. Allow to air dry or gently heat set with your heat gun. Do not overheat, as this will warp the vellum.
Step Two
Flip your image. You’ll be adding color to the reverse side of your image. This will prevent any streaking with your markers. I used Copic markers and they absorbed just fine into the vellum cardstock. They do have a tendency to look lighter than usual, which makes them perfect for muted tones and a vintage look.
Another thing to note is to use a bit of scrap paper under your stamped image. My work surface isn’t normally this clean. Having a bit of scrap under the image makes this so much easier to see the stamped detail.
Step Three
Begin by laying down the skin tone colors. In most of the Copic tutorials posted at Cornish Heritage Farms, you use multiple colors to create depth. I found that layering colors on the vellum tended to lift the color. Don’t overwork or over think the coloring process. While the first color is damp, add a bit of blush to their cheeks and arms. Keep it simple.
Add a bit of the skin color to the water at the bottom of their dresses to give highlights and shadows around the figures.
Step Four
In the same manner as above, color in the hair. Add a darker color while the lighter tone is damp to give added depth. It’s easy to keep the coloring simple because the stamped image is what will shine here.
Step Five
Color the ocean with a light blue. Add a bit of grey to highlight the troughs of the waves.
Step Six
Color the girls dresses. If you’d like to keep a dress white, you can. Add highlights with grey for the folds and shadows. Add bits of grey around their arms, to the shell and at their feet for added interest.
Step Seven
Compare to the stamp label to see if you’d like to make any other additions to your coloring. Flip your image again - right side up.
Finish the Project
Matte your vellum on white (or light colored) cardstock to let your coloring show through. Complete your card.
A Few Notes:
-I used glue dots to adhere the vellum to cardstock and hid them under the metal photo corners for this project. However, you may be able to add a bit of glue to other areas, depending on color and shadows. Test on a scrap piece.
-Ink takes a bit longer to dry on vellum. Allow to air dry completely or gently heat set to avoid warping.
-Copic markers work wonderfully with the Adirondack line of inks. Because you're stamping on one side and coloring on the other, you can use inks that are not normally compatible, like Stazon solvent inks. Experiment to find the perfect combination for your vintage project!
Please drop us a note here if you create your own Vintage Vellum project. We'd love to see!
Thanks!

Lisa, this is a fabulous tutorial and a gorgeous sample you've created! I'm guessing this technique would also work fabulously with the TK images since they're also highly detailed. I think I might have to break down and get some Copics. Oh darn. |

You're right! This would work well for the TK images.
