Well as you know, here at CHF we are forever trying out something new! We are always expanding our horizons and pushing the envelope...one such thing that CHF is now known for is developing a way to convert Full Color Art into a Black and White image that can then be made into a rubber stamp. Our first attempt was with Thomas Kinkade - Painter of Light images; and they have been a HUGE SUCCESS. Well we recently have taken on another line of full color art that will be releasing next week called Friendly Kritters by Tom Allen. With this new line we thought it would be a good idea to do a "back to basics" educational post about what the art is like and how to get the best impression from this type of art. So today I have a product comparison for you as well as a sneak peek of the finished project for next weeks tutorial! Smile

White Cardstock Side By Side
Here I have three types of cardstock and white copy paper.

Simply Smooth White Cardstock
Georgia Pacific White Cardstock (available at Walmart)
Prism Prismatics White Cardstock
White Copy Paper

All are "white" but as you can see they all have a different shade of white. I wanted to point this out now as in the next few pictures the "whiteness" of the white card stocks will appear very similar due to them being photographed at different times and a little level adjustments in Photoshop.

The following photographs are to illustrate the texture of the card stocks and the way each ink reacts to and stamps on each card stock. The Simply Smooth cardstock has a very smooth finish that feels as though it has coating to it.
The Georgia Pacific cardstock is smooth, but less so than the Simply Smooth and it has a blue cast in comparison.
The Prism Prismatics White is nearly as white as the Simply Smooth but no where near as smooth. It has a textured side and a smooth side but the smooth side is almost toothy. It is not "rough" but it is the least smooth of the three.

The reason that the smoothness of the cardstock is important is that the smoother the cardstock the better the detail of the image will transfer...but all of that also depends heavily on what ink you use. Below you will find a side by side comparison of each of these three papers and FIVE different inks.

Chocolate Ancient Page Ink
Here you will see how the image stamped on each paper when inked with Chocolate Ancient Page Ink by Clearsnap. I find this ink too wet and too "thick" for this type of image. Images like this need a fine detail ink to help keep the image clear and finely detailed.
Charcoal Fluid Chalk Ink
Here you will see how the image stamped on each paper when inked with Charcoal Fluid Chalk Ink by Clearsnap. And again, I find this ink too wet and too "thick" for this type of image. I found this ink left the image too soft and "chalky"...hence the name of the ink!
Coffee Bean Brilliance Ink
While not my favorite "shade" of ink for this project I found that Brilliance Ink by Tsukineko gave a good full coverage but kept a great deal of the detail in the image. I just wish I had a Black Brilliance Pad now! Smile
Onyx Black Versafine
Another ink I found gave a nice full coverage but kept the detail was Versafine. I think that my pad was a bit too moist (it is brand new) and so I may dab a bit of the excess ink off with a paper towel to get it to the level of moistness that I prefer to work with. Many ink pads come with too much ink in them and this "problem" is easily remedied by simply turning the pad upside down onto a folded up paper towel and pressing lightly to remove the excess ink. Now, don't do this too much or you will remove too much ink and will have to purchase a reinker sooner!!!
Jet Black Stazon
My fifth and final ink that I tried with this image was Jet Black Stazon by Tsukineko. I actually found I preferred this ink over all of the others in terms of detail and coverage range. It is the ink I chose to use when doing my technique for next weeks coloring tutorial.

So in conclusion, of all of my combinations, I found I preferred the Jet Black Stazon with the Simply Smooth, but in all fairness, Onyx Black Versafine and Brilliance came in a VERY CLOSE SECOND...

The Simply Smooth cardstock has a very smooth finish that allows the ink to stay very detailed and due to the beautifully smooth finish coloring is a breeze...
Finished Project
And so on that note, I want to try to tempt you back next week! I will leave you with a sneak peek of the finished project for the coloring technique I have planned. Smile

Fantastic Keri! You couldn't have made it any simpler for folks unless of course you created everyone's cards for them Laughing

Yes Misti you were a true blessing in this. We really appreciate you "putting" us together with Tom - this is going to be a great relationship.

Thanks,
