There's nothing more durable and reliable than red rubber stamps. This technique is one you could never do with clear stamps. The deeply etched red rubber that's a signature of the CHF quality will hold up to the heat of your iron every time.
And if you're like me, I had to go purchase an iron for crafting. Yes... I avoid all things that require regular pressing. I went to a discount store and found one for $7. Perfect for this project!
Please join us this week in embossing velvet, whether it's a large piece of fabric or some lovely velvet ribbon you have in your stash.
Basic Supplies
- Stamps
- Ink
- Cardstock and scrap paper
- Color Media of choice
- Iron and Towel (to protect surface)
- Velvet (cloth or ribbon)
- Water in a spray bottle
Specific Supplies Used:
Step One
Place a towel on your surface to protect it while ironing.
Heat your iron. I set it at the highest heat. I did not add water for steam. You may need to experiment to see what works best for your iron and the type of velvet you are embossing.
Step Two
Place the Art Nouveau Backgrounder face up and the "fuzzy" side of the velvet face down on the stamp.
Lightly spray both sides of the velvet with water before ironing.
Step Three
Place a piece of scrap paper / copy paper over the velvet.
Gently iron, taking care not to move the fabric when heating. You should just press downward with the heat, rather than rubbing with the iron as you would if pressing a blouse.
Step Four
Remove the scrap paper and gently lift a corner of the fabric to see if it's successfully embossed.
Detail
The Art Nouveau pattern is transferred to the velvet.
Finished Project
Use the embossed velvet in your projects to give that lux and glam feel!

Oh wow, I've never seen this technique before!
Just yesterday I bought a spool of embossed velvet ribbon. I thought I was so cutting edge, here you've been doing this for months! |

I love this technique, it gives such a great look!
If you're trying this out, be aware that different velvets will give different results. A pure cotton velvet is probably not going to give you such a deep and crisp impression - something with some synthetic fibre content will probably work better. _________________ Joanne x
